This recipe book was compiled by Mrs. Joseph T[atnall] Baily of Wilmington, Delaware. The Baily family were prominent in the business world of the Wilmington, Delaware area. Mrs. Baily's husband, Joseph T. Baily, ran an iron foundry and a drug store, as well as serving as president of the Bank of Delaware between 1810 and 1841.
Mrs. Baily's book includes recipes for savory dishes, desserts, and alcoholic beverages, instructions for preserving meats and other foods, and medicinal remedies. Loose papers inside the volume include an invitation, menu, and pamphlet for a complimentary banquet held for President Ulysses S. Grant in Wilmington, Delaware, on February 6, 1873. Other items include several pink dye packets and an advertisement for ice from Pusey & Rice Wholesale Ice Dealers.
