Description
Jane Elizabeth Taylor bought the notebook in which she wrote her book on 1827 September 13. Roughly the first quarter of the book is dedicated to mathematical exercises, including multiplication and division. The remainder of the book, written in the same hand as the mathematical exercises, contains recipes for food and drink. The use of the alkaline leavening pearl ash in some of the baking recipes indicates that the book was compiled in the United States and dates the book to between 1827 and the mid-1840s, when pearl ash was superseded by the alkaline leavening saleratus. The The book is housed in a paper box that appears to be later than the time the book was written.
