Description
This English recipe book of 90 leaves, written in multiple hands, contains several hundred recipes presumed to have been used by the family of Mary Burwell Walpole (1655-1711). The first half of the volume contains a mix of general culinary and medical recipes such as "To make cherry wine"; "To preserve apricockes"; and "To stay vomitting." The second half is composed primarily of specific medicinal prescriptions for various members of the Walpole family, many dated and prescribed by Dr. Short. These recipes include "A vomit for Mr. Edw. Walpool"; a prescription to soothe obstructions of the liver "Aug. 2nd for my lady Burwell," and "pills appointed for Eliz. Burwell by Mr. Short for the stomach and asthma."
