Description
This English recipe book of 59 leaves, comprising over 100 medical and culinary recipes, is written from both the front and back of the notebook. The book is in two hands. The recipes written from the front of the notebook, which are primarily medical, were likely compiled by Mary Burwell Walpole (1655-1711). Her recipes include several for children as well as one labeled "Sir Thomas Wetherly's directions for Madam Walpole." This section of book also contains a list titled "The Age Of All My Children," which contains the names and birthdates of Mary Walpole's 17 children, one of whom was the 1st Earl of Oxford. The recipes written from the back of the notebook, in an unknown hand, are primarily culinary but also outline some cosmetics and remedies. The culinary recipes include To Make Custards; To Make Cheesecakes; and John Ingam's Receipt To Make White Bread.
