Posnet

Type: Food preparation
Material
iron
Purpose
A posnet was used rather like a sauce pan today. As a result of its legs and heavy material, it could be placed directly above or in the coals of an open hearth while food cooked within.
Creation Date
19th century
Date Details
According to 300 Years of Kitchen Collectibles (Franklin 462), "posnet" comes from the Welch word meaning porringer or little dish. In the United States, the word "posnet" was dropped early on but the tool was produced up through the latter 1800's. All of the posnets listed in 300 Years of Kitchen Collectibles are from the late 18th century to the early 19th century. Without any nomenclature on the object above, it is difficult to date this item since these little pots have been around since the seventeenth century. However, based on its material composition, condition and similarities to those listed in 300 Years of Kitchen Collectibles (Franklin 462), a good estimate would be to state this posnet as nineteenth century artifact.
