Date Details
The Thompson Scale Company still exists today and manufactures high tech weight and measurement systems. Unfortunately, no further historical information on the company or on the designer of the scale, Henry Thorman, could be located. As a result, a specific date for this item could not be determined. However, many of the similar counter scales listed in 300 Years of Kitchen Collectibles (Franklin 336), range in date from the mid 19th century through the very early 1900's. The style of this American made scale is similar to the "French Scales" that are observed in 300 Years of Kitchen Collectibles (Franklin 336) and are dated in the early twentieth century (1904-1910). Therefore, it is conceivable that this scale is also from the either the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. It is interesting to note that the majority of the early counter scale manufacturers operated from Philadelphia and perhaps this is the reason why so many counter scales appear comparable.
