Pivoting Toaster
Pivoting Toaster

Pivoting Toaster

Type: Food preparation
Material
iron
Purpose
Bread slices were placed between the braces and lowered into heat in a heart. With the flip of the handle, the bread could be toasted fairly evenly on all sides.
Creation Date
1775 – 1825
Date Details
According to 300 Years of Kitchen Collectibles (Franklin 475), the pivoting toaster allowed the bread to be toasted on all sides. By picking up the apparatus by the handle and maneuvering it in a flip fashion and setting it down again, both sides of the bread were exposed to the same source of heat. Among the various pivoting toasters listed in 300 Years of Kitchen Collectibles, all of them date back to either the late 1700' s or early 1800's. Hence, it is very possible that this pivoting toaster is also from that same era.
