Cork Press

Cork Press

Type: Food preparation
Material
iron
Purpose
This press was utilized for crimping corks in order to fit them into different bottle tops. This was achieved by placing the cork in one of the slots and applying pressure upon the handle thereby condensing the cork into a more compact form.
Creation Date
19th century
Date Details
Most of the similar cast iron cork presses listed in 300 Years of Kitchen Collectibles (Franklin 421) and those found at the website for "Andre Burgos Antiques," are dated in the latter part of the 1800's. Although no particular date for the cork press above could be identified, it would probably be reasonable to say that this cork press was also a late nineteenth century item.
