Chopping Knife

Type: Food preparation
Material
iron
wood
Creation Date
1800 – 1850
Date Details
Chopping knives varied among the number of blades and handles; this knife has only one blade and required only one hand to use it. This knife may have been a hand-forged craft as noted in 300 Years of Kitchen Collectibles (Franklin 27). Factory-produced knives first appeared during the Industrial Revolution in the latter half of the 1800's and were utilized throughout the remaining 19th century and well into the twentieth. Therefore, as a result of this and the composition of its materials, style and condition, this likely hand-forged knife may date back to the early or mid 1800's.
