Description
The first part of this manuscript notebook contains a number of cooking recipes and medical cures, some dated, some in hands other than that of the principal writer, and some signed with initials or names. Other entries include preparations for coloring rooms, preventing moths in fur and wool, and fixing chalk drawings. The notebook is signed by the owner, "Lady Caroline Douglas, Dalkeith House, 1805 Dec. 14." Lady Caroline Scott (1774-1854) was the third daughter of Henry Scott, 3rd Duke of Buccleuch. In 1803 she married Charles Douglas, 6th Marquess of Queensberry. Dalkeith Palace is currently leased to the University of Wisconsin for a study abroad program.
