Description
This book was compiled by Mrs. John Cain, born Mary Billings, who lived from 1813 to 1907. In the 1850 census, Mrs. Cain lived in Rutland, Vermont, with her husband John and four-year-old son Jewett, whose name is written in her recipe book. By 1871, Mrs. Cain had moved to Elizabethtown, Kentucky, while her son continued to reside in Rutland, Vermont. The volume contains recipes for hash, cakes, puddings, fruit cake, pie, grape juice, and sauces, among other foods. Several recipes are attributed to persons, perhaps friends or neighbors, and a few are dated. The recipes are indexed in a database available at the library.
