These two recipe books are contained in the historical society's John Gilman D'Arcy Paul Collection, 1788-1970. One was compiled by Anne Maria Morris in 1824. The other was probably compiled by Mrs. Frick and is undated. Both books comprise a mix of culinary recipes and cures for common ailments. The relationship between the two cookbook authors and John Gilman D'Arcy Paul (1887-1972) is unclear. A member of a prominent family, Paul worked as a journalist, editor, and translator, and also worked for the U.S. government in diplomatic capacities. He was a trustee of Johns Hopkins University, the Peabody Institute, the Peale Museum, and the Baltimore Museum of Art, and served as vice-president of the Maryland Historical Society.
