This 136-page cookbook is written in many different hands. Most of its authors were apparently members of the eighteenth-century English Cross family, as various Cross family names, including Richard, Ann, and Thomas Cross, appear throughout the volume. Many recipes contributed by various individuals are laid into the volume. One recipe, laid in at page 12, is signed "The undersigned twenty years British Consul at Cadiz... J.M.Brakenbury, Calderstone, Jany 17. 46." In a different hand, another receipt is signed "For Thos. Cross Esq." One laid-in sheet appears to have been written in the late 19th century and suggests that this volume was used long after its original composition.
