The inscription of the author/owner of this book appears on the back of the front flyleaf: Janet Alves, Long Detton Hill (?), 1850. There are hand-written recipes on first 41 pages of the book. Poetry and prose selections are written from the back of the book moving toward the center, upside-down in relation to the recipes. A handwritten remedy for hooping cough and a newspaper clipping with a recipe for home-made polish are laid in.
