This recipe collection is written in a notebook with ruled  pages for accounting. Some recipes at the front are written over and between accounts. "J.W. McVine Esq 1861" is written at the head of first page. The collection focuses on baking, particularly cakes, for which forty-eight recipes are outlined. There are also recipes for Transparent pie, Boston cream cake, Kentucky cake, steamed Indian loaf, Astor House rolls, baked Indian pudding, and Worcester pudding, as well as grape ketchup, chow chow, and piccalilli.
