The front free endpaper of this book contains the signature of Hattie E. Babson, with a note, in a different hand, that she was "married to Edward Babson Jr of Gloucester, Mass. Ceremony performed by Starr King at San Francisco Cal. when she was 19." The book was likely compiled in the mid- to late-nineteenth century. 

The collection comprises over 250 recipes, primarily focusing on baking. It contains 105 recipes for cakes (including some that are cookies by modern definitions), by such names as Harrison, Boston, Washington, Poverty, Composition, Election, Buchanan, Douglas, Berwick, Dayton, Chelsea, and Shrewsbury. There are a few recipes for household products and remedies in the back.
