Description
This recipe book is part of the library's collection of the papers of William Alexander Hoke (1851-1925), a lawyer, legislator, and Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court. The book was written between 1842 and 1851 by W. J. Hoke, who must have belonged to the generation of William Alexander Hoke's father, Colonel John Franklin Hoke (1820 or 1821-1888), a Confederate officer who became a distinguished attorney after the war and who also owned a gold mine and sawmills, was active in railroad promotion, and was a trustee of the University of North Carolina from 1874 to 1879. The bulk of the book is given over to medical and household recipes, but there are some culinary recipes as well.
