Description
The Haywood family, originally of Raleigh, North Carolina, included a number of individuals prominent in governmental affairs, learned societies, law, and medicine in the 19th century, as well as several antebellum planters. The library's collection of the Haywood family papers contains five recipe books compiled around the time of the Civil War. Ranging in length from 13 to 48 pages, all are written in a single hand, by different unknown authors. The books particularly focus on recipes for sweets but also contain recipes for preserves, pickling, and breads.
