Description
Martha Cowles' recipe book, dated 1846, is part of the library's collection of the papers of Calvin Josiah Cowles, of Wilkes County, North Carolina. Martha Duvall Cowles (1824-1866) married Calvin Cowles (1821-1907) in 1844; the couple had seven sons. After Martha Cowles' death, Calvin Cowell remarried circa 1870 and had five more children with his second wife.

Calvin Cowles was a  merchant who also owned land in several states as well as copper and mica mines in northwestern North Carolina. He was a Whig and post-war Republican who served as superintendent of the U.S. Mint at Charlotte, North Carolina, from 1869 to 1884 and was a consistent promoter of land, mining, and railroad development in northwestern North Carolina.
