Description
A lifelong Georgia resident, Stephen D. Heard (1807-1875) practiced law from 1835 to 1847, and then worked for the remainder of his life as a commission merchant in a succession of firms in which he was partner. He was active in civic affairs and served on the board of two railroad companies and as president of a third. He was married in 1836; his son Richard Willis Heard (d. 1880) was a business partner.

There are two recipe books in the library's collection of the Stephen D. Heard papers. (See Series 3, Folders 213 and 214.) One is an anonymous volume of 45 pages, dated 1839-1865, written in four hands. It is in four parts: a ledger, a family register, an inventory, and recipes, most of which concern sweets. The second recipe book was mostly compiled by Anna Edgar, of Augusta, Georgia, though it also contains a second hand; it contains dates from 1828 to 1867. Comprising 61 pages, this book has recipes for pickling and sweets as well as recipes for cures and household products.
