In addition to culinary recipes (mostly baked goods, puddings, and preserves), Elizabeth Shoemaker's book contains instructions for salves and other remedies and cleaning tips. The book is undated. Three commonplace books compiled by Elizabeth Shoemaker, also in the library's possession, are dated 1827, 1830, and 1839, so perhaps the recipe book is also of the 1820s and 1830s.
Elizabeth R. Shoemaker (1809-1855) was born in Shoemakertown, Pa., the daughter of Charles and Margaret Shoemaker. She married Abraham Taylor in 1848, and the couple had three children: Margaret Wood Taylor (1849-1857), Charles S. Taylor (1850-1940), and Sarah Merritt Taylor (1853-1947).
