Description
Written in several unidentified hands, this book of approximately 100 pages consists of farming notes and veterinary medical recipes interspersed with recipes for drinks and foods. "Farriery" (the craft of shoeing horses) is written across the lower edges of the leaves. Recipes for drinks predominate among the nonveterinary recipes. Included are recipes for Elderberry Wine, English Madeira, Ginger Brandy, Milk Punch, Malt Wine, and How to Fine Gin. A recipe for Ginger Beer appears next to “For Maggots in Sheep.” Most of the culinary recipes address food preserving, such as Preserve French Beans, To Cure Hams, Raspberry Vinegar, and To Preserve Gooseberries. There is also a recipe for “Mother Eve’s Pudding,” a boiled apple pudding that was extremely popular in both England and America in the nineteenth century.
