Description
This volume contains copied poems and verse, mathematics exercises, notes on history and events, and twenty-five culinary recipes. Pages 78-104 of the volume, which include the culinary recipes, are written upside down in relation to the front.  The recipes (pages 78-89, 91-92) include custards in cups (page 79), to collar an eel (page 82), to make egg wine (page 84), rasperella (page 86), veal cutlets (page 87), a receipt for one that is sick of love (page 91), walnut catsup (page 92), and to dress a fowl like a woodcock (page 92). Several of the recipes are attributed to Mrs. Mayfield, Mrs. Gardiner, and Mrs. Baker. In some instances, Powell recounts where she learned of or made the recipe, for example, “Mrs. B’s party, Dec 20th 1821” (page 84) and “I did this at Mrs. Baker’s in Jan 7 1820” (page 86).
