The cookbook of Emily Bradenbaugh Niernsee, dated 1861, is contained in the historical society's John R. Niernsee Papers, which span 1838-1967. Emily was the mother of John R. Niernsee, a prominent architect who designed the South Carolina state house and the Johns Hopkins Hospital (in Baltimore, Maryland). He was also the surveyor for fortifications around Columbia, South Carolina, under Governor Bonham during the Civil War.
