The recipe book of Catherine E. Tyson, which dates from the 1850s, is contained in the historical society's Smith-Tyson Papers. Elisha Tyson (1750-1824), the scion of the Maryland Tyson family, was a well-known Quaker abolitionist, philanthropist, and wealthy merchant-miller, whose estate was valued at $300,000 at his death.
