Description
This recipe book is part of the library's massive collection of papers related to James Boswell (1740-1795), remembered today for his biography of the English writer and lexicographer Samuel Johnson. Boswell was the 9th Laird of Auchinleck, an estate in the historic Scottish county of Ayrshire. The recipe book is organized in a section of the collection that contains a variety of material either collected by the lairds of Auchinleck or concerning families connected to them. The library record states that the book is written in various eighteenth and nineteenth century hands and contains both culinary and medical recipes, the former including "India pickle" and "good Civet," a stew often made with hare.
