Description
This 226-page English recipe book has been dated ca. 16490-1740 by the library. It was owned at some point by Hans Sloane (1729-1827), a politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1768 and 1806. Sloane represented four different districts in the south of England during his parliamentary career, which may give some indication of where this recipe book originated. Most of the entries in the book are food recipes or relate to food preparation, although there are also several medical recipes. Interspersed throughout the volume are summaries of a 14-volume History of the Civil Wars of France, by H. C. Davila, an Italian work translated into English in 1630.
