Description
Robert 2nd Viscount Jocelyn, 1st Earl of Roden (ca. 1721-1797) was the only child of Robert Jocelyn, 1st Viscount Jocelyn, an Irish statesman whose manuscript book of dinner and party menus is part the Winterthur collection. After attending Oxford College and briefly studying the law, Robert, 1st Earl of Roden returned to Ireland in 1643 and became a member of the Irish House of Commons, a position he held until 1756. In 1752, he married Anne Hamilton, a daughter of an Irish earl. The couple had twelve children. He became 2nd Viscount Jocelyn upon the death of his father, in 1756, and was created 1st Earl of Roden in 1771. By the end of his life he had made his family major landowners in Ireland. In addition to recipes, his commonplace book contains songs and other verse.
