Description
This small, leather-bound volume of approximately 118 written pages belonged to Sarah K. Fotterall, whose name is engraved on the front cover. Culinary recipes, which comprise about three-quarters of the volume, are written from the front of the book. Medical recipes, which comprise most of the remainder of the volume, are written from the back on the book, upside down in relation to the front. There are also a few practical household recipes. The food and drink recipes are arranged in categories such as meat preparation and pickling. Some pages at the end of categories have been left blank, presumably to preserve space for future additions. The recipes include instructions for preparing fish, beef, pastries, vegetables, bread, beer, and cordials. Some of the recipes are attributed. The library has surmised that the book was compiled in the early to middle 19th century.
