This recipe book, dated ca. 1862 by the library, is part of the library's collection of the papers of Charles James Fox Clarke. Born in New Hampshire in 1807, Clarke travelled to Illinois in 1833 and bought land in the vicinity of New Salem, Illinois, to farm. He married Rachel Smith of Cass County in 1841, and the couple had four children. The family settled in Menard County, where Clarke served as county commissioner for four years and then as county judge from 1853 to 1861. Clarke died on April 9, 1870.
