Description
Polly Kirtland's recipe book is part of the library's collection of the papers of the Kirtland and Morse families, founders of Poland, Ohio. Polly Kirtland, born Potter, was the wife of Turhand Kirtland (1775-1844), of Wallingford, Connecticut, who was an agent for the Connecticut Land Company, and conducted surveyors and emigrants to the Connecticut Western Reserve. In 1803, Kirtland bought Polly and their children from Connecticut to Poland, Ohio, which he had surveyed in 1798. In 1804, Kirtland served as state senator from Trumbull County. He also served as Associate Judge of the Court of Common Pleas and Justice of the Peace in Poland.
