Description
This manuscript of 78 leaves is predominantly in one hand, with some additions in later hands. The library believes that the principal author kept the book over a considerable span of time, entering recipes in the notebook during the second half of the eighteenth century and later sewing in additional leaves of recipes, some of which, near the front, are dated 1827. The book was apparently in long use, for there are clippings laid in dated 1918 and later. An alphabetical index begins at the front of the volume and continues on leaves 33v-36r.

The recipes in the book are mostly culinary. Many are uncommonly detailed. Included are a number of recipes for different curries. There are also a few medical and household recipes, as well as instructions for the cultivation of roses and strawberries. Some recipes are attributed to locations, including Alverley Grange, Wanliss Hall, and Coton Hall. Many recipes are credited to individuals, including several ladies of nobility.
