Description
This journal details a voyage by the bark Clement from New Orleans to St. Petersburg between May and July of 1838. The ship's home port may have been New London, Connecticut; its master possibly George V. Jordan; and its log keeper possibly Sarah Ann Jordan. The journal describes daily wind, weather, provisions, illnesses on board, and shipboard activities. It also includes the author's commentary on books read and events held during the voyage, as well as a letter, a few accounts, a poem, knitting instructions, and recipes.  The first page is inscribed: "Mrs. Mary Dove, Newburyport." The inside front cover contains a note: "Oct. 27: Spoke on Grand Bank Sch. Robin of Marblehead, 12,000 fish."
