The volume contains recipes and home remedies compiled by James S. Sawer of Philadelphia. Sawer (listed in the city directories as Sawyer) operated an oyster saloon at 10 North 2nd Street. He died in 1844. Recipes include "horseradish sauce," "oyster catsup," "to put mackerel or herring," "raspberry vinegar," "wallnut ketchup," "to make the curry," "ginger beer," and others. There are remedies for coughs, sore throat, piles, stomach complaint, and other ailments. The collection also includes a clipping with directions for making lamp fuel.
