This receipt book is inscribed "Mrs. H. G. Loper, Charleston, So. Ca. 1854." The book is in several different hands and was likely continued well beyond the inscribed date. The book contains the name of Annie D. Loper, daughter of Julia Loper.
The book includes recipes for pickles, cakes, catsup, marmalade, puddings, jellies, pies, breads, wines, fritters, sauces, doughnuts, and other foods. It also contains remedies as well as directions for pickling and for making soap and "Japanese" cleaning cream. There is an index. Clippings relating to health, cooking, and weights and measures are pasted into the book.
Julia Frink Loper was the wife of Henry George Loper (1800-1881), whom she married in 1847. A native of New London, Connecticut, she moved to South Carolina in childhood and lived in Palatka, Florida, from 1888 to the time of her death. She is buried in Magnolia Cemetery, in Charleston, South Carolina.
