1859Description
This anonymous English recipe book is compiled in a small volume with decoratively stamped leather covers. An 1859 calendar is pasted on the inside front cover, suggesting that the book was compiled around that time. There are also newspaper clippings pasted in the volume.
The bulk of the recipes are culinary. They cover a range of meat dishes, souffles, desserts, cakes, fruit preserves, and drinks, including curry; fondue; castle, Christmas, fig, marmalade, and Scotch puddings; snow souffle; toffee; lemon and Madeira cakes; and wine biscuits. Napkin folding instructions are written on two leaves. There are also instructions for knitting slippers. Recipes for chromatography ink or dye, washing colored silk, and furniture polish are at the end of the volume.
