Description
This English manuscript was compiled in an oblong notebook by William Fenney, who may have lived in London. He was a trumpeter in the 2nd Regiment of Life Guards, a Household Cavalry of the British Army formed in 1788. Fenney wrote payment receipts in the front of the notebook and then filled the rest of the notebook with culinary recipes for cakes, jams, jellies, meat dishes, patties, pickled foods, preserves, puddings, sauces, and wines. Included are jams and jellies made with currants, plums, and raspberries; potted foods such as cheese, pigeon, poultry, and veal; and Bath, hasty, and sultana puddings. There are also recipes for birch, cowslip, elderberry, and gooseberry wines as well as Frontignac. Many recipes are attributed to Mrs. Raffle and Miss Dyson.
