Description
This 80-page recipe book is in the hand of Catherine Bentley, who inscribed her name and the date 1822 on the front flyleaf. The volume mostly consists of culinary recipes for soups, fish, preserved meats, puddings, sauces, pickles, wines, punches, and desserts, Included are recipes for Mulligatawny soup, a great favorite in the period, and Regent's Punch, named for King George IV, who ruled as Prince Regent from 1811 to 1820. Several sauce recipes call for "Indian Soy," a prepared condiment somewhat similar to today's soy sauce. The book also contains a small section headed "medical receipts."
