1822-1872Description
This leather-bound notebook of 88 leaves is inscribed on the first page, "Book for recipes, June 17, 1822, Charles F. Clark." The final recipe, for "loss or imperfection of eyesight," is dated 1872. The book was compiled by Dr. French Clark (1800-1875), a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Medical School who lived and practiced in Woodbury, New Jersey, where he was a founding member of the District Medical Society for Gloucester County. Dr. Clark primarily used the notebook to record medical recipes. But, interspersed among the medical recipes, Dr. Clark also wrote a few culinary recipes for preserving hams, currant wine, spiced rhubarb, and other things, as well as a few formulas for household products like black varnish.
