Purpose
This device usually hung from a bracket fastened to a chimneypiece over an open fire and the roast was hung below. This machine came with an iron clock key (usually with handle), which worked the spring loaded clutch within the jack. In this manner, the jack could hang for long hours under difficult conditions without attention.

According to Spinning Wheels: Collectible Iron, Tin, Copper & Brass (Revi 46) roasting jacks were used in the first half of the nineteenth century. The most common clockwork roasting jack was created by a man named John Linwood. The jack noted above is a Linwood style roasting jack.
