As noted above, the patent date of this device was 1870 and therefore this object was probably utilized in the late nineteenth century. A very similar wall-mounted nutmeg grater produced by J.M. Smith of Seymour, Connecticut, as seen in 300 Years of Kitchen Collectibles (Franklin 54, 56), reveals this same patent date. In addition, 300 Years of Kitchen Collectibles states that the Smith grater was also made in another model with a screw clamp frame. Consequently, it is probable that the artifact above is a Smith Grater.
