Type: Food preparation

otherPurpose
The device above was employed to do two tasks. The first was to grease a griddle or other pot, pan or cooking surface. This would be done by removing the tin crown and placing the lubricant, either butter or lard, into the cloth. The crown would then be replaced as the cloth is pulled tightly so that the lubricant could slowly seep through the cloth. In this manner, the greaser would be rubbed against the surface of the griddle before cooking. After cooking, the scraper would go into action. The scraper blade would scour all the old "stuck on" food particles from the griddle, similar to other early pot and pan scrapersCreation Date
1875 – 1899Date Details
The patent date of this tool is 1873 and therefore it was probably utilized in the late nineteenth century and perhaps into the early 1900's. No further information could be located on W. H. Bixler or this particular griddle scraper. Many of the pot and pan scrapers listed in 300 Years of Kitchen Collectibles (Franklin 435) are dated the late 1800's or early 1900's as well but it should be noted this type of tool was still being utilized well into the 1930's.Marks/Inscription
