According to Kitchen Collectibles (Plante 91), hand-held juice extractors had been around for centuries in Europe and with the introduction of citrus groves in the United States during the 1700's, fruit juicers began to appear in households. During the 1800's, a wooden two-part hinged mechanical juicer was handmade and then later factory produced. In the later half of the 1800's, however, oranges and grapefruits became more available and juicers became an important kitchen tool. It is at this time that they were made of cast iron, some even with porcelain inserts (cup & bowl) as the Arcade Lemon Squeezer seen at Meeker's Patented Antiques. According to 300 Years of Kitchen Collectibles (Franklin 45), the Arcade Manufacturing Company produced lemon squeezers / fruit juicers in the late 1800's and into the early 1900's. Consequently, this fruit juicer was probably utilized in the later 1800's or around the turn of the century . Later, fruit juicers were made from various materials including tin, g lass & aluminum.
