Description

This 372-page book of culinary and medical recipes is in several hands. The book originally belonged to Joanna Sudell ("Joanna Sudell Book Anno Dm̃ 1688" is written on the front free endpaper), who was probably the wife of Thomas Sudell of Wanlass Park and West Witton, Yorkshire. The volume appears to have passed down to Joanna Sudell's daughter Katherine, who married Francis Thornburg in 1734. (A prescription dated "Sep. 24 46" for "Francis Thornburg Esqr." is laid in.) Also laid in is a torn piece of paper that includes the words "Geo. Sudell" and "in Essex." Several recipes in the book are attributed to their contributors. There is an index to the partial contents at the beginning of the volume.
