The recipes include General Grant Pie, Pilot bread, Egyptian punch, Federal cake, Sunderlands, Laplanders, Virginia loaves, Maryland pickle for hams, pickled "marlynia," Indian soup, and chowder using Pilot bread or ship's biscuit. The book bears Middle Atlantic influences.
