1707Description
This recipe book is inscribed on the title page: "Mistress Anna Campbell Her Paistrie Booke, 1707." Anna Campbell of Edramuchy was the daughter of Duncan Campbell, a descendant of the Scottish Campbell clan, which dates back to the 13th century. In1683, she married Robert Stewart of Killiechassie and Pitcastle (1650-1729), who was a member of the Stewarts of Atholl, a branch of the Stewart family descended from Robert the Bruce and King Robert II of Scotland. Anna Campbell died in 1730.
The recipe book is written almost entirely in Campbell's hand. It includes approximately 400 recipes organized in six rough sections: pies (mostly savory), pastries, cakes, tarts, and custards; sauces for meats; a lengthy section of 176 varied recipes, including meat dishes and savory and sweet puddings; dairy recipes; biscuit recipes; and fruit preserving. The book concludes with five recipes in an unidentified early hand other than Anna Campbell's.
Anna Campbell's recipe book was handed down in the Campbell family for over a century. The inside back cover contains the notations: "This book belongs to the Lady Glenfalloch June 22nd 1725" and "This book belongs to the Lady Glenfalloch [illegible] 1725 Jean Ca[mpbell]." Following Anna Campbell's inscription on the title page there is a blue pencil inscription: "J. Stewart [illegible] great great grandm[other's?] cookery book!!! . . . 1864."
