Mrs. William A. Graham's recipe book is part of the library's collection of the William A. Graham Papers. The author was born Susan Sarah Washington and lived from 1816 to 1819. She was married William Alexander Graham (1804-1875), a wealthy lawyer and prominent North Carolina politician, who served as a United States Senator from North Carolina from 1840 to 1843, the thirtieth governor of North Carolina from 1845 to 1849, and as Secretary of the Navy under the President Millard Fillmore administration from 1850 to 1852. He was the Whig Party nominee for Vice President in 1852. Although initially a Unionist, he eventually embraced the Confederate cause and served in the Confederate States Senate from 1864 to 1865. William and Susan Graham had ten children, eight of whom survived both parents.

Mrs. Graham's recipe book is located in Series 2, Folder 370 of the finding aid to the William A. Graham Papers.
