The spine of this Victorian manuscript reads: "Household and Recipe Book of Mrs. Garrow and her Daughters." The book was compiled by a family of substantial means, in New Castle, England, between 1810 and 1902. The first page of the manuscript has a letter tipped in which gives instructions as to how to put a dog to sleep using chloroform and morphine. There follows a list of household directions, including the linen to be given out in the house every week, quantities of necessary stores to be ordered, servants' agencies and duties, what to do on Sundays, and more. These general house rules are followed by numerous recipes in various hands, some from earlier books and others from visitors, etc. There are also 13 pages of recipes written starting from the back of the book, including "our curry," "Lord Wynford's curry powder." "Omelet au Parmesan," "and Oyster Salsify." The book comprises 105 written pages, plus inserts, and a 3-page index.
