The library's Markoe-Emlen families correspondence includes a recipe book compiled by Ellen Markoe Emlen (1814-1900). Born one of eleven children to a Philadelphia family, Ellen Markoe married George Emlen (1814-1853) in 1840. The couple had four children. Ellen may have lived in the Virgin Islands at some point. She died in Philadelphia.
