Description
This 42-page manuscript largely consists of recipes from Dr. William Kitchiner's cookbook The Cook's Oracle, as revised by novelist Thomas Love Peacock. This manuscript was apparently written in preparation for an aborted project that Peacock undertook with his daughter, Mary Ellen Nichols Meredith, and her second husband, novelist George Meredith, to prepare a revision of Kitchiner's entire cookbook. (See Mrs. Meredith's Dissertations on British Cookery.) In addition to "The Science of Cookery," the Pforzheimer Collection includes thirty-eight of Peacock's personal recipes unrelated to The Cook's Oracle, written on loose sheets. A transcription of these recipes is available here.
